Frequently asked questions (FAQ)

BLUESTAR® reagent

Yes, BLUESTAR® Forensic can react on very old blood. It has been successfully used to detect traces dating back more than 7000 years. It is common for BLUESTAR® Forensic to be used to reveal traces of over 20 years.

The detection capacity of BLUESTAR® Forensic was measured at 1/100.000 (see study)

BLUESTAR® Forensic products should be stored in a dry environment in temperatures ranging 39°F – 86°F

The reaction of BLUESTAR® Forensic is immediate upon application and last 30 seconds to 2 minutes depending of the blood dilution and the material

BLUESTAR® Forensic reacts to human or animal hemoglobin and synthetic blood containing hemoglobin.

Yes, BLUESTAR® Forensic will react to all hemoglobin

BLUESTAR® Forensic can leave invisible residues. It is best to clean treated surfaces with water and a sponge or washcloth.

BLUESTAR® Forensic, which is primarily an alkaline solution, is a non-toxic product that leaves no unwanted residue. To effectively clean a surface, whether wood, metal or any other material, after using BLUESTAR® Forensic, the following procedure is recommended:

Use a damp sponge with soap to wash the surface.
Rinse the surface with a damp non-soap sponge to remove any soap residue.

BLUESTAR® Forensic can produce reactions in the absence of blood. This reaction, called false positive, will occur on contact with certain acrylic paints, varnishes, chlorine products, etc. This reaction is however very different from the reaction on blood.

With practice, you won’t be able to mistake a blood reaction for a false positive. (page false positives)

You can use a bloodstained cloth. BLUESTAR® Forensic will react to human or animal hemoglobin.
